Don’t you dare, life’s too short to hate this daily process.
Here’s what you do:
1. Consider your outfit in your head first
Before opening what feels like the gates to Mordor (your closet) in the AM, rather think about what you’re going to wear already the day/night before. This will save you so much time in the morning and release you from that morning madness so many of us suffer from. This will take a few minutes: like thinking about what you’re going to cook for dinner; or consider this during your ritual meditative-like escape while your co-worker, Susie, tells mundane tales about her cat.
Think about the next day’s expectations (meetings with clients, weather appropriateness, etc.), as you don’t exactly want to show up to a staff picnic in your leather skirt and stacked heels – unless, of course, it’s thusly themed…
2. Random purchases are THE WORST!
Stop! In the name of Anna Wintour! Just stop buying random pieces of clothing or accessories that you like. Now this sounds harsh, and I promise, I do want you to be happy, but you are ruining your life! Okay, maybe, not life per se, but definitely your chances of having a working wardrobe. Working in the sense that it works for you, like the delightful intern who strokes your ego by asking you every few days whether you’ve lost weight. She’s lying by the way.

When buying random items consider what you can wear it with. If it makes up at least 2-3 outfits where it can easily be mixed and matched, then get it. If not, either shop more items that will go with it or leave it on the rack.
3. Be inspired by others
Use social media tools like Instagram and search the hashtag #streetstyle. You can always refine your search by city, say #NewYorkstreetstyle or #Parisstreetstyle – depends on your style interests really. Whatever you feel will inspire you the most. I’d say New York for more casual, sports luxe and Paris for the classics with a twist. You might not be able to recreate the exact outfit, but you might just get some ideas of how to assemble an ensemble.
