After Melody Mazibuko (30) from Soshanguve was academically excluded from the University of Pretoria, she set out to find what she really loves to do.

In 2012, she started her own takkie-painting business, House of Kayise, with her mother Ntombikayise Skosana.

“My mom has always been a painter. She used to paint on the walls and one day I pitched an idea that we do something together,” Mazibuko tells #Trending. The business now has a huge clientele and the duo have painted takkies for customers from across the globe, from Cape Town to Germany to Spain.

“People loved what we did, and we’ve been enjoying it,” she says.

She now dreams of opening an art institute in Pretoria, specifically in a township, where different artists can showcase their work in a corporate setting.

The takkies sell for R400 for a white pair and R450 for black, or R250 if you bring in your own pair to be painted.

House of Kayise’s takkies will be featured next Sunday at 7.30pm on SABC1’s iKani, South Africa’s first isiNdebele drama.
