The biggest trap people fall into is opting for a quick fix when it comes to a home makeover. In the long run this will cost you the same or more than it would have cost thinking it through.

You don’t have to do everything at once, but you should at least have a clear idea of what you want the entire house to look like when done. If not, you might end up with various good looking rooms, but in different styles and without any visual flow. Starting with the end in mind will also help you to stay focused and to work systematically.

The easiest way to know what you want is to do what professional decorators do - make a dream board.  Put some effort into visual research and find pictures online of houses and interiors that you love.

Once you see what beautiful and clever ideas are out there, your style will evolve and you’ll soon know what will work for you. Do a PowerPoint presentation of ideas for each room and the exterior. Printing it will make it easier to take with when you start shopping for specific items.

Structural changes

If your budget allows, invest in structural changes and space planning. Call in the help of an architect or interior designer. Initially it might feel like you are splashing, but the professionals know the most cost effective alternatives without jeopardising the look. A few designer lines and good flow will also up the value of your house.

New fixtures

If structural changes aren’t needed, or not an option, upgrade the bathrooms and kitchen. Decide what tiles, flooring, work tops, cabinets, sanitary ware and mixers will complement your dream look. Shop around and opt for the most elegant and luxurious items that are slightly more expensive than what you wanted to pay. Choose beautiful lights to add warmth and character.

Instant makeover

It is hard, but not impossible, to beautify a home with bland architecture and budget fixtures. If a superficial makeover is your only option, then make the most of it. Still work towards your dream look, but use paint, wallpaper and a few feature furniture pieces to give maximum impact.

Don’t forget to declutter. It is the quickest and one of the most effective ways to freshen up any home.
