Keep it Afro Minimal

accreditation

The last thing you would think about Nigerian culture would be that it’s minimalist. I think of it as robust and fiery. Olubunmi Adeyemi, a young designer and entrepreneur from Nigeria, has a range of homeware that is challenging those notions. His range of simple yet chic utensils, including wooden spoons, bowls, pestle and mortar sets as well as platters, conveys his appreciation for understated functionality.

Adeyemi studied in both Cape Town and London, where he developed his perspective from the approach methods the designers in these cities have to their work. He is an enthusiast of the Japanese minimalist aesthetic and functional Scandinavian style. He fused some of these ideas with some African flavour to create work that comes across as intricately simplistic. The Afrominima range had another name before the one it now holds. It was first called Àga, from the Yoruba word (the Nigerian tribe Adeyemi belongs to) for a functional object or furniture piece.

“It’s all about connecting the past, the present and the future. A minimal object can function in a very complex environment,” he explains.

Adeyemi created the impressive range during a creative enterprise development programme facilitated by the British Council, Lagos Business School and the Cultural Industries Development Agency in the UK. It’s clean, like you could get really surgical with your kitchen chores. Lovely wood with very little splashes of colour at the edges or on handles will definitely make your kitchen look fresh.
