Would you hang at Joziburg Lane?

accreditation

Eloff Street in the Joburg CBD doesn’t always bring swanky sophistication to mind.

In fact, you might envision a rugged exterior covered in a thin layer of grime. Well, things have changed.

Now, nestled at the number one spot in the street, you’ll find a new hang-out well worth checking out. Joziburg Lane at 1 Eloff Street is a vibey new space with a market and shops, as well as apartments, restaurants, bars and art studios.

Joziburg (okay, let’s not front – the name could be better) has breathed life into the shell of a building that was run down and abandoned not too long ago. Now, it’s truly a sight to behold.

In the building’s main atrium you are welcomed by light shades made of the chequered bags – also known as “no problem” bags – we all know from travelling. At the entrance there’s a Pakistani spaza store that stays open until late, which must make living there a dream.

There are art studios with popular street and graffiti artists showcasing their creations, and you can do some clothes shopping at a number of stalls and stores with some rather rare-looking threads. Geoff Jardine, who’s involved with the company that brought this idea to fruition, says that the Joziburg precinct “took shape around two smaller neighbourhoods that we’ve been developing independently”.

“The obvious progression was to link the two and look to improve and restore everything in between.”

Joburg’s CBD offers the perfect setting for young entrepreneurs to make their mark in a global environment, which is what Jardine and his team looked to achieve. Number 1 Eloff is slowly becoming a popular event venue as the building has quite a few spaces to choose from and any kind of event can be accommodated.

“Our most recent events include the Feel Good series, Kulture Fashion Spaces and the Magents launch,” Jardine says. The building also boasts a number of restaurants and bars such as Dorkay Rooftop bar and Hangout Jozi.

The loft-style apartments have been tailored for the young professional and those who enjoy an abundance of food, shopping and entertainment near home.
