It’s a story that reaffirms the adage – love conquers all, even distance and time.
A former American soldier reunited with his French sweetheart after 75 years, adoringly telling her: “I always loved you. You never got out of my heart.”
Kara Troy Robbins, or KT as he’s called, was filmed meeting his sweetheart Jeanine Pierson on the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landing, reports The Metro.
The 98-year-old showed Jeanine a picture of her he’d kept all those years. They might not have been able to communicate much because of the difference in languages but it’s clear love is a universal tongue.
"He said he loves me. I understood that much," Jeanine said in French, laughing.
KT was 24 when he was stationed in Briey, in the Meurthe-et-Moselle region in north-eastern France during World War 2 in 1944. He fell in love with Jeanine, 18 at the time, but after just two months the pair were forcibly separated when he had to leave to the eastern front.
"When he left in the truck, I cried, of course, I was very sad," Jeanine remembers. "I wish after the war he hadn't returned to America."
KT however did and eventually got married. Jeanine, who even learnt a few basic English phrases in the hope KT would return, got married too, reports Euronews.com.
But neither forgot about the other.
When KT returned to France for the recent D-Day anniversary commemorations, he brought along the photo of Jeanine.
He was unsure whether she was alive but enlisted the help of French journalists to track her down.
According to The Mirror, the journalists arranged the emotional reunion.
When KT had to leave he promised they would meet again, sweetly telling his lover: “Jeanine, I love you girl.”
