After four years of bringing good food, good music and good people together through THE WKND SOCIAL, Johannesburg’s much loved brunch-cum-day-party series, Mamakashaka launched Feel Good Series, a monthly rooftop party that turns up in town.
On Saturday, 23 February, Feel Good Series presents UMI: Our Music Festival, the mother of all Feel Good Series parties, at Victoria Yards, from 3 pm until midnight.
The micro-festival marks the start of something new, with a line-up that includes four live acts and eight DJs, including Yanga Yaya, Darkie Fiction, DJ Doowap, Muzi, Blaqkongo and Melo B.
What are you looking forward to the most at UMI?
Honestly, to it all! We’ve worked really hard to put together what we hope will ultimately be a beautiful-looking and feeling day. The Feel Good Series has always had a special vibe, which we’ve done as much as we could to amplify. I look forward to more performances and DJ’s, all at an incredibly special venue, Victoria Yards.

What can the public expect from UMI this coming weekend?
If you’re no stranger to Feel Good, then you can expect everything you’ve come to know and love about the series but more. Regulars as well as newcomers, you can expect amazing live performances from emerging artists like Muzi and Yanga Yaya, Integrated DJ and performance sets from the likes of DJ Doowap. Moreover, if you love hip-hop, afrobeats and dancehall and everything in between, then we’re the party for you.
How and when did your passion to inspire women come about?
I honestly can’t pinpoint when, but I suspect that it has a lot to do with the fact that I was raised in a family of predominately women. My male cousin was the only man in a house of three girls and three women. My company, Mamakashaka, is also an all-female agency. Women are what I know and seek to serve, and so I find myself continuously gravitating towards trying to make the world a better and more accessible for us.
What advice would you give to young creatives who’d love to be entrepreneurs one day?
Work hard, but also know when to quit, or better yet, when and how to evolve. Be prepared to do the work that is required of you. I believe the secret ingredient is smart and consistent work.
Who is your personal favourite female musician?
Without a doubt, Nina Simone.

How would you describe your style?
Ha! Having recently done away with more than half my wardrobe after watching Tidying Up with Marie Kondo on Netflix, I’m not entirely sure. It’s easy and simple with touches of personality. In the past the personality was often bohemian and I find myself quite attracted to resort and beachwear of the beach! Right now, I’m evolving and I’m compelled to strip down, do less, and be simpler.
