Question

My wife and I have been together since 2006 and we got married in 2013. In August last year she went to Durban with some colleagues, all of whom were women except for the company owner, who drove them. A few weeks later my wife forgot her cellphone at home and she called me to ask if I’d bring it to work. I wondered why she was so desperate to have her phone so I looked at her messages. I was shocked when I saw a comment from her to a female colleague saying, “I did something wrong. I slept with the driver. Cheating is wrong but I had fun.” I was so disgusted and disappointed but remained calm and gave her the phone. I left the WhatsApp dialogue open and five minutes later she called me to explain. She said it was a prank she played on her colleague. To this day I don’t know if the story is true, but I’m losing faith in this relationship. I don’t want my kids to be affected so please help.

Answer

You have every right to feel as if your relationship is becoming shaky. What you saw could make anyone have doubts about the person they’re with. If her explanation doesn’t really satisfy you then you need to ask her all the questions that are running through your mind. You need to get clarity and she’s the only one who can give you answers to those questions. Just be prepared for anything once you start digging for the truth. It would be beneficial for you – and your relationship with your wife – to seek assistance from a marriage counsellor. The counsellor will be able to guide you and give you the necessary support to work on repairing your marriage.
