You may have just passed matric, but not good enough to enrol for a degree. On the other hand, you may have passed well, but you didn't find space at a university or you simply cannot afford to further your studies. You may now be wondering what kind of career you can get into with just a matric certificate or no qualification at all.
CAREERS WITH NO QUALIFICATION
Veronica Styger, a recruitment manager at Kontak Recruitment, says there are plenty of jobs you can get into with just a matric certificate.
“Think about jobs such as being a waiter, going into promotions and retail. Consider becoming a chef if you have a passion for food and cooking,” advises Veronica. Other careers to consider include firefighting, nursing and being a receptionist. “It is possible to have a successful and fruitful career from these jobs. Once you start making a bit of money, invest some of it in acquiring a certificate or degree to improve your skills. This can help you get a raise or be promoted,” she says.
Veronica suggests that you get a sales job if you are great at selling things. “You don't need a degree to work in sales as positions are commission based, so the more you sell, the more money you take home. If you perform well in this job, you can end up being an account executive,” she says.
It is easy to find administration jobs without a degree. Veronica says many companies require you to have a matric certificate, be well spoken and able to multitask. You will be taught other things that the company might require you to do.

BE YOUR OWN BOSS WITH YOUR SKILLS
Keitumetse Molubi, a human resource administrator, who also has experience in recruitment, says it is important to note down what your interests are and what skills set you already have in order to decide which career path you want to get into. Keitumetse says it is hard to find a job with or without a qualification and that is why people should consider starting their own businesses as another option other than being employed.
“Starting your own business takes a lot of patience and isn’t necessarily for everyone. It might look easy, but it is very challenging. Firstly you need funds to start the business, clients and consumers to buy your products and services and to be comfortable with a minimal income at the beginning,” she says. Keitumetse suggests that if you want to get into business, you should consider starting a business that you are passionate about. “For example, if you are good at baking, start baking and selling cakes and biscuits to your neighbours, friends and those close to you. You can also sell at the bus stop or any place where there are many people. From there, you can expand and grow your business by baking cakes for birthdays, weddings and other events which will bring in big profits. At a later stage, if you work hard, you will be able to afford to move your business from your home to a more suitable location,” she advises.

If starting a business isn’t for you, rather get a job that does not require a qualification. You will get work experience and interact with different people. “Interacting with different people exposes you to lots of information and many opportunities. It isn’t all bad starting from the bottom if you are driven,” says Keitumetse.
