THE FORMATION: This stokvel was formed in 2012 by recently married women. Their main purpose was to support one another in all aspects of their lives. Their lives revolved around their homes, church and work and they wanted a group where they could be social outside of these areas while also saving money for family funerals.

They wanted a club that would empower them and where they could take care of one another’s social wellbeing, finances, share their challenges and find solutions.

MEETINGS AND MONEY: They meet every second Sunday of each month and contribute R250 – R200 is for funeral cover, R30 goes to the person who will host the next meeting and R20 is for entertainment.

The entertainment money is used for Mother’s Day and Women’s Day outings and their yearly getaway. Each time they meet, they open with a prayer and the member who hosts gives a talk on an empowering topic.

After the prayer and talk, they get down to business and talk about issues within the club and collect the monthly contributions.

SOCIALISING: The women enjoy attending various uplifting workshops together. They also go hiking from time to time and organise outings where they invite other women who are not part of the club to motivate one another and discuss solutions regarding issues faced by women in general.

To be able to really support one another, the group is divided into four groups of five women who are required to be there for one another during times of need. The members of each of these smaller groups rotate each year.

CHALLENGES: Conflict is the biggest challenge the club faces, especially because it is made up of people with different personalities and different views, and sometimes they do not see eye to eye on things.

The group says constant and honest communication has been the biggest key to dealing with their conflict.

Stokvel Corner: The women decided to keep a joint grocery list which contains essential items for big events like funerals.  Each time one of them has an event, the others are each required to buy a few items from the list to help relieve some of the financial pressure of the member in need.
