Russian-born tattoo artist Alisa Postupinskaya was born with only one fully developed arm. Doctors don’t know why her other arm didn’t develop beyond the elbow.
Remembering her first few days at school, Alisa says, “Curious children bombarded me with questions, called me names and laughed at me. My first year at school wasn’t easy, I didn’t want to talk to anyone.”
Eventually, her classmates got used to the fact that she had one arm and stopped asking her questions. “We started being friends,” she says.

But if there was one thing the 19-year-old has always been in love with, it’s painting. She was so passionate about it and fixated that teachers would report her to her mom for painting nonstop instead of paying attention in class.
“My mom would only laugh and say that she has a creative child.”
Alisa wanted her art to have meaning, and becoming a tattoo artist allowed her art to become part of people. She found a mentor and started training as a tattooist.
She has now mastered her skills and co-owns a tattoo parlour with her mentor. The youngster hopes to earn enough money for a new prosthetic arm as she’s outgrown her previous one, which she got when she was 16 years old.
