According to Parliament on 25 May 1963, “Africa made history with the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now the African Unity, (AU) to build greater unity and solidarity between African countries and its people."
The day is aimed at celebrating and acknowledging the success that the AU has had in the fight against colonialism and apartheid. Furthermore, it highlights the progress the African continent has made in the last 57 years, and looks at the challenges Africa still faces.
