Oxford Healthcare Retreat

There’s no denying that the year-end slump has most of us feeling drained and running on low energy levels, which is why I was grateful when I was offered the opportunity to spend a night at the Oxford Healthcare Retreat. It’s a boutique guesthouse that merges wellness and serenity.

I had the pleasure of having an overnight stay at the retreat, which gave me time to relax – I didn’t even know I needed to slow down. Constantly chasing deadlines can take its toll, so the hospitality and care I experienced at Oxford Healthcare Retreat was wonderful. The guesthouse has five exclusive bedrooms with balconies and en-suites, so your privacy is guaranteed.  The décor features varying white tones, which add to the charm.

I got a chance to speak to the retreat’s founder, Julia Halstead-Cleak, who says she wanted to give people with stress and health issues a place to go ‘woosa’.  “I started the retreat after realising the high number of mental health cases I dealt with whilst in private practice as a clinical psychologist. People are exhausted. I also live in Joburg so I was aware of my own stress levels,” she says.

“I think this retreat is a great place to give people an integrated treatment that addresses the body as well as the mind. But people need to know we’re not a mental health facility or clinic,” Julia explains.

My stay started with a deep tissue neck and massage using peppermint oil to help clear my sinuses. They actually tailor-made a treatment for me – that was a nice touch. They chat with you about your specific needs, illnesses or what you might be struggling with prior to your treatment so you can get the best care possible.

Next was a healthy dinner – very low in carb and sugar. I then enjoyed a great sauna session and chilled at the music sensorium room before bed. The retreat is all about connecting with yourself using all your senses, so it’s a phone-free zone. This might turn off the younger crowds but it’s perfect for adults who need a time-out. In the morning, I had green juice and enjoyed a yoga session before digging into another healthy but yummy breakfast.

The overall sense of the retreat is that of tranquility – you even forget that you’re in the hustle and bustle of Joburg. Other great facilities include a custom-designed floatation pool, which has salts to assist the nervous system, as lush gardens and various reading rooms.

If you’re looking to revitalise and replenish mind, body and soul, I suggest you look into Oxford Healthcare Retreat. They are truly a perfect 10/10.
