The Sons and Daughters Burial Society is made up of close as well as extended members of the Mthimkhulu family. They decided to start this burial society after realising how expensive it is to bury a loved one.
MEETINGS & MONEY MATTERS: The group get together on the first Saturday of every second month. Even though they don’t meet monthly, each member still contributes R200 each month.
It is each member’s responsibility to deposit their contributions into the society’s bank account at the beginning of each month and send the proof of payment to the society’s WhatsApp group.

The group opens their meeting with a prayer each time they meet. They then check the minutes of the previous meeting and look at the agenda of the new meeting.
The group members wear uniforms to their meetings, branded with the name of their society. When a member is not wearing their uniform or arrives late, they are fined R20. The money from the fines go into the group’s account and is used to buy items needed for ceremonies and funerals.
THE CHALLENGES: The biggest challenge the burial society has is being a part of a society with other members of family. As with any family, there are issues, and they find that sometimes family issues end up interrupting their meetings.
To help with enforcing rules, they set up a disciplinary committee that ensures they navigate meetings in a professional manner and stick to the rules of the club.

Stokvel Corner: The Sons and Daughters Burial Society supports members of their family who are unemployed and would love to be part of the group but can’t pay the contribution.
The group is made up of employed family members in each household of the family who identified those within their family who are unemployed and agreed that each employed member would cover 10 people who do not have any not have any source of income.
