Learning how to apply makeup can feel like a never-ending masterclass. Here we unpack common mistakes and look at quick fixes.

1. Applying make-up on a dry face

A properly moisturised face is a great canvas for a clean and smooth finish. So, ensure that your face is properly hydrated with a face cream or serum before you apply any product.

2. Makeup application in the wrong lighting

Before you can decide on what works and what doesn’t, you need to test it on your skin in natural lighting. When you try on make-up in artificial light, you will notice that it does not look as flattering as you hoped. Pick what suits you best under the best possible light, and test the colour for 24 hours, before choosing your shade.

3. Wrong blending techniques

Makeup is much more than dabbing on a blush or eyeshadow; it is about mastering the art of blending. Even if you apply a neutral shade, it will end up looking streaky and uneven unless you blend it properly. Invest in a quality foundation brush or blending sponge. Then, starting with your nose, blend the foundation into your skin with the tip of the brush or sponge, and work in small areas at a time, to spread it evenly.

4. Too much foundation

Unless you are wearing light, sheer make-up, you don’t need foundation all over the face. Simply apply it on your cheeks, nose and the under-eye areas. Ensure that you pick a shade that matches your skin tone. Don’t use one that is lighter as it will accentuate any blemishes and fine lines. Make sure to also apply it on your neck and ears for a more natural look.

5. Mascara mistakes

More than two coats of mascara will end up looking clumpy, as will a product that is three to four months old. Hold the wand vertically to apply mascara on your lower lashes, otherwise it will clump up and result in spider-leg lashes.

6. Applying lipstick to naked lips

To make the colour last without smearing or drying out, prep your lips with an ointment or light face moisturiser. Let it soak in while you do the rest of your make-up routine. After a few minutes, apply your lipstick. The added moisture will ensure your lipstick does not wear off right away, and that it glides on smoothly and evenly.
