The 16 days of activism against gender-based violence was commemorated at popular Cape Town eatery The Raptor Room with a music show in aid of The Girl Impact.
In a first for The Raptor Room, the event boasted a full cast of female staff and performers.
Phenomenal female musicians Keren Lindley, Kayla the Crow, Fay Lamour and Cami Scoundrel performed “Imagine If” and entertained the crowd to raise funds.
According to Texx and The City, The Girl Impact project was launched in 2014 by Africa Impact and the African Impact Foundation to bridge the gender inequality gap.
The project believes in connecting with communities to hear their needs and not prescribing to communities
The project promotes gender equality through education, health, income generation, self-confidence, safety and early pregnancy awareness, according to their website.
Danel Maree, co-owner of The Raptor Room, says events like these are important for creating awareness of charities and organisations.
“Foundations like Africa Impact and Girl Impact are important because they do the work. We can support them and they’re making an active difference in teaching and educating and changing lives for the better.”
The Raptor Room has initiated the “Come In” policy which extends a warm welcome to all women who feel unsafe on the street following the wave of gender-based violence across the country, reports Cape Town ETC.
The venue has since become a safe space for LGBTQIA+ individuals and women.
