For years she got lingering stares and was made to feel uncomfortable because of a birthmark that covers a large part of her neck and chin but now 18-year-old Olivia Holm Poulsen is celebrating what makes her unique.
According to metro.co.uk, the student from Denmark had grown up hating her birthmark and would camouflage it with make-up.
She desperately wanted to get it removed but when she became a teenager and joined the world of social media, she realised it was something to be celebrated when she saw others embracing their own imperfections.
“I researched the treatment and even went to see a doctor. Now I’m so thankful I never went ahead with it,” she says.
In November last year, she posted a selfie with her birthmark covered in glitter and received glowing feedback and close to 7 000 likes, according to xpose.ie.
Speaking to allure.com, Olivia said, “The comments made me want to inspire people to embrace their imperfections and not hide them. I wanted to show that it’s definitely not a negative thing to have something that makes you stand out from the crowd.
Then, I decided to put some glitter on it because who doesn’t love glitter?”
“I love to create make-up looks that incorporate my birthmark,” she says. “I love to be creative and when I’ve had a busy day and just need to de-stress, make-up is a great tool.”
