Three lessons Amanda du Pont is taking into 2020

1. To stay healthy and active

This one is so hard to stick to but I often amp myself by wearing my gym gear and vowing to figure things out when I get to the gym [chuckles]. People think that exercising comes easily to me, yet they don’t know how much self-convincing goes on behind the scenes. I watched an elderly couple race past me during the Two Oceans Half Marathon last year and suddenly understood how our people deteriorate quicker in old age. I want to continue forcing myself to be healthy so I won’t have to enlist help from 10 people just to get to the loo [chuckles].

2. It’s ok to spoil myself

In as much as I have rules and goals, I’m learning that it’s ok to eat that piece of cake or buy that pair of shoes. You honestly can’t wait for other people to treat you, you have to do it for yourself first. Food and travel are my biggest guilty pleasures which is why I work so hard. I can’t compromise on good meals so I’ve opted to train harder. In 2019 alone, I visited five places and when the urge to travel arises too often, I have to remind myself that it’s time to work [chuckles].

3. I love money and money loves me

And you know what, that’s totally fine. You have to affirm these things and not be doubtful while doing so. I always joke saying if there were ever a job for someone to moonwalk in neon leotards I would jump at the opportunity. But jokes aside, I’m career-driven so I love any job that is well-compensated. One of the things I want to improve in 2020 is to live smaller and save some more — I’m doing great but need to be better. At some point, life has to be about way more than money entering and leaving our bank accounts.
