In our June issue, owner of Urban Mosadi, Tiisetso Molobi talks about the brand and what the future holds.

What led to starting Urban Mosadi?

It was quite accidental. Urban Mosadi started as a personal blog 10 years ago and 6 years ago I began customising my own camera straps using Batik fabric.

Where do you find design inspiration?

I’m inspired by the African continent, West Africa to be exact. I also learn a lot from travelling and having to make products that suit my needs and style.

What sets you apart from other brands?

We pride ourselves in using authentic textiles and genuine leather. Also, designing our own textiles has been key in maintaining the brand.

What challenges do you face in the creative industry?

Finding suitable artisans in Johannesburg is difficult. Our production is based in Cape Town, which makes operational costs high.

Do you plan on having a variety of products in the future?

Yes, I’m planning on having Urban Mosadi garments, textiles, homeware and collaborate more with my six-year old daughter on a kiddies’ range.
