What does a 74-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man have in common?
Love and marriage, apparently. The first time Almeda Errell from Maryville, Tennessee in the US, set eyes on then 17-year-old Gary Hardwick, was at the funeral of her eldest son, Robert (45), in 2016. It was love at first sight.
Gary immediately started dating Almeda, a mother of four, and two weeks later asked her to marry him.
“I just came out with it and said to him, ‘Look, I’m 71 and you’re 17. Am I too old for you?’ He squeezed my hand, grinned, and replied: ‘Age is just a number’,” Almeda recalls.
The wedding took place just three weeks after the proposal.
But not all of their family members approve of the relationship, with some saying Gary (21) is just a gold-digger. Gary, who was raised by his grandmother, dismisses these claims, saying, “People talk with no sense.”
The couple is still as in-love as they were three years ago, with Gary claiming the sex is beyond his wildest dreams.
The 74-year-old grandmother says Gary is a “wonderful lover”.
“We’re always complimenting and kissing,” Almeda says. “We’re enjoying our relationship. When you meet that perfect one, that’s when you know you don’t want to lose that feeling.”
Almeda was married to her first husband, Donald, for 43 years. He passed away in 2013 due to complications from diabetes.
But Almeda isn’t Gary’s oldest partner – one of his exes was 77 years old when he dated her. But that relationship didn’t work out because they were always bickering, he says.
Almeda makes him happy, he says. “She’s a cutie who makes me laugh all the time.”
