A woman has spoken out for the first time about her agony at having to give birth to a miracle baby – just four days after her husband died in the same hospital.
Kelsey Ferguson (31), from Minnesota in the US, lost her husband Scott days before welcoming her son, Maxley Russell, in June last year, nine.com.au reports.
Maxley weighed just 1 021 grams when he was born 33 weeks into Kelsey’s pregnancy.
According to her, Scott (30) hadn’t been feeling well for some weeks by the time she was admitted to hospital due to her high-risk pregnancy.
The couple didn’t think anything of Scott’s condition, believing it was simply a flare up of his psoriatic arthritis. "I had been admitted on Monday to Abbott Northwestern Hospital’s mother baby centre . . . He went home after visiting me that night and before bed was coughing up blood and couldn't catch his breath," she recalled.
Kelsey had been on bed rest at the hospital when Scott admitted himself to the same hospital, Mirror UK reports.
Due to the seriousness of his condition, later diagnosed as a rare auto-immune disease that attacked his lungs, Scott was admitted to the intensive care unit, where he later went into cardiac arrest.
"Looking back, I think the other doctors were really sugar coating his condition and how bad it was," Kelsey said.
She said the days following her
husband’s death were a complete blur, but now her primary focus was her son’s
survival.

"I would say my world ended the day [Scott] left this earth but in a way a new life began when our son was born just four days later.”
