Emma Barua decided to celebrate when she and her ex-husband became officially separated and claims the party was better than her R40k wedding.
The 29-year-old had been with her partner for two years when they decided to get married in July 2017 to help him move from Australia to the UK.
Unfortunately the couple’s relationship broke down 16 months after their fairytale wedding and they filed for divorce in November 2018.
“We didn’t have communication in our relationship anymore – I tried for months to find a way forward but eventually I decided I’d had enough,” Emma says.
When she received her decree nisi, the document which states a court sees no reason to prevent a married couple from separating, Emma celebrated with a bash for friends and family.
“I wasn’t sad and I didn't want people to be sad for me because I saw it as a celebration,” she said.
“The party was the complete antithesis of a wedding but there were certain things that felt similar.”
Donning a red floor-length velvet dress, Emma marked the occasion by destroying a black heart pinata and cutting into a vegan dark chocolate cake on her own while her 50 guests enjoyed a DJ, balloons and party games.
Emma has since found love again with her 38-year-old new boyfriend.
She says she can’t see herself getting married again in the near future but hasn’t ruled out walking down the aisle ever again.
