Remember you’re a team

To avoid ending up fighting about ‘your parents’ and ‘my parents’ it’s best that you treat your parents equally. Because this is a whole new experience for you, you’ll experience anxiety and frustration. The best way to deal with this is to share the responsibilities, and handle them as a team.

Laugh it off

If you grew up with your grandparents, laughter will help you get through th days when they are difficult. Instead of taking everything they say to heart, acknowledge and understand that being difficult is what elderly people do in general.

Don’t compromise on date nights

If there’s ever been a time when you needed to stick to your scheduled date nights, it’s now. Your sanity will depend on it. Opt for nights out, away from the house and your parents and do things that excite you as a couple. We’re sure they can survive on their own for a few hours.

Set caregiving rules

Taking care of your elderly parents can be exhausting if there’s no support system, and that’s where your partner comes in. Set out a roster, detailing tasks like taking turns to make breakfast, helping them to exercise or giving them their medication. As the saying goes, team work makes the dream work.

Dedicate a day to yourself

Having more people live with you can mess up your whole living arrangement and routine. However, this doesn’t mean you should neglect yourself. Even though you can’t go out till the early hours of the morning, dedicate time to hang out with your friends and let loose.
