Luke-warm feet

Hi everyone,

So Charles and I are buying Our First House. And out of the blue I’ve developed a serious case of the heebie-jeebies. What if we can’t afford it?

What if we don’t like the house when we see it again? What if I lose my job? What if the neighbours are murdering psychopaths?

“We’ll be real grownups!” I wailed at Charles.

“Well Pie, we ARE in our 30s,” he responded reasonably.

“But… but… what if we want to backpack through India for 6 months?”

“You want to backpack through India?” he raised his eyebrow sardonically.

“Well… no I don’t. Not now anyway. But I MIGHT want to one day...” I could hear the petulance in my voice – which usually happens when I know my argument is shaky.

And then it hit me. This had nothing to do with the house. Or with getting older. This was just another step in our relationship. Moving in together. Getting married. Buying a house. Getting a dog. And even though it is kind of scary, it also became completely clear to me that there’s no-one on the planet I’d rather interweave my life with. We’re hitching our stars together and if that means tying myself up financially, legally and emotionally, then I guess that’s what marriage is all about.

So this week I’d like to ask you about commitment.

What does it mean to you? When did you realise you are committed to your partner? Or not. Was it when you fell in love? Was it when you had sex for the first time? When you got engaged? When you moved in together? Or do you, like me, think commitment is a continuous process which needs to be checked and rechecked constantly? Let us know.

Oh, spare a thought for me when the baby issue rears its head, will you?

Love and wobbles,

Lili
