A woman has revealed her long-term partner, with whom she has a child, shares custody of a teddy bear with his ex-girlfriend.

The teddy, called Bear, is passed between their houses so the former couple stay in regular contact.

She and her partner have been together for almost two years, the woman, who hasn’t been named, explains in a thread on Mumsnet.

She says her 40-year-old partner split from his ex a few months before they started dating. The split was very much amicable.

“They’ve hardly had any contact since. She seems to be a perfectly nice person.”

However, things got really awkward when the ex-girlfriend came around to take Bear on holiday.

It was the first time she became aware of the unusual arrangement.

“DP [her partner] hadn’t warned me that this was happening, and I was just expecting her to drop some of DP’s stuff off. DP did the handing over, but it was all unbearably awkward,” the woman wrote.

She thought that exchange would be the end of it, but was shocked when her partner mentioned a few months later that he was going to drop Bear off at his ex’s house.

She says although she’s “100% certain” there’s nothing going on between him and his ex, the situation has made her feel “incredibly weird and uncomfortable and actually a bit insecure”.

“I know full well the reason he didn’t tell me was because he was embarrassed about it (and rightly so!) but still, it seems disloyal to arrange things with an ex and not tell me.

“And then there’s the fact that it’s so f**king weird! I can see, when she asked if she could have Bear for Christmas, he felt he couldn’t object without seeming mean and petty or making me out to be some suspicious psycho (he knows I wasn’t totally happy about the last time).”

Her boyfriend couldn’t give his ex a cuddly toy of her own for Christmas because she’d “miss Bear’s personality”, she explained.

She asked other social media users for advice and added, “I don’t know what bothers me about it so much.

“I think this sort of stupid infantilism about DP’s bear is fine within the confines of a romantic relationship but outside of one, it’s just a bit creepy.”

Other women agreed with her on social media that the situation was odd, Metro reports.

“I don’t even know where to begin with this one,” one commented. “Why do they have a shared bear?”

“This is really weird. He needs to just give her the bear and end the madness!” said another.

What do you think – creepy or just cute?
