A new year means a new start, and for many that means a change to their surroundings. But you don’t have to fully splash out on an expensive renovation or go as far as to buying a new house to get a fresh new look for 2019. There are a few small changes that you can make to your loved abode that will have it looking sparkly and new in no time at all.

We created a list of five tips that all homeowners and dwellers can use in order to give it the new start makeover it deserves:

1. Give your home a fresh coat of paint

What a difference a colour can make! From jade green to sky blue, there are a host of colours available to choose from. The right shade of paint will add personality to your home and can change the entire ambiance of a room. And with technology, you no longer have to stand for hours in the paint aisle at the hardware store or trial-and-error your paint at home, there are now a range of apps where you can take a photo of your space and the app will virtually add the colour on the wall, so you know exactly what it would look like before you start painting.

2. Spruce it up with some new pieces of art

Purchasing artwork does not have to be expensive. Simply frame a favourite print,  or if you are the art connoisseur, you can adorn your walls in unique and original art pieces that can be bought at auctions, galleries or directly from artists – or maybe try out your own creativity and create art pieces yourself!

3. Or reframe old pieces of art

Sometimes what you need is not all new pieces of art but a new way of looking at them. New frames can bring new life to your favourite pieces of art. Chat to a professional about getting the right bordering and frame colours that complement the room and the art work to give them that wow factor.

4. Reupholster your headboard, cushions or a piece of furniture

You cannot talk about home makeovers without talking about reupholstering. A simple change of fabric can make your home go from shabby to glam, or beige to fun! Over time fabric gets worn out and reupholstering is a good chance to make your old furniture look new, and gives you a chance to update a look.

5. Plants add an organic touch

If your home is lacking that something extra, bring in some plants. Not only will they improve your air quality but it also adds to the authenticity and style of your home. Even if you don’t have a green thumb, you can find low maintenance plants that are easy to look after.

6. Mix it up with some interesting lighting

Times have changed and the lighting of your room no longer needs to just be a bulb covered by a lightshade, it can be the centrepiece of your room. From chandeliers to the latest led lighting, you can transform your room from dull to dramatic.
