A calm retreat a stone’s throw from the city

Capitec Bank has launched its #LiveBetter campaign, which encourages people to explore new and unexpected places in their cities. Capitec clients enjoy a 10% discount on their treatments when paying with their Capitec cards.

Mukda Thai Spa is a stone’s throw away from Gordon’s Bay, but once inside you’re transported to a world away. While parking outside the outside of the building only hints at the Thai opulence inside, but once I stepped through the doors I was greeted with dark woods, gold Thai designs and the traditional warm smiles from the spa staff so synonymous with Thailand. From the décor to the traditionally dressed spa staff, every detail conjures up a sense of a calm Asian retreat and helps to transport you on a mini-holiday to Thailand.

The inside space has been well utilised to accommodate various guests’ requirements. The larger treatment rooms can seat up to 6 for your manicures, pedicures and group massage bookings with small individual and couple treatment rooms run-off on all sides from the main lounge areas. With no less than 11 different massages on offer there is something for every ache and pain. For those unfamiliar with Thai massage, it is an ancient Eastern technique that involves gentle rocking, acupressure, reflexology and stretching to open energy and tone the whole-body system. It is designed to improve awareness and to balance body, mind and spirit.

Refiloe Nkoane and I were thoroughly pampered by a relaxing and soothing foot reflexology massage to start, and I was then whisked away by the therapist to a Thai Lotus hot oil massage - It’s a top pick and very popular at the spa. Guests can choose 60/ 90 or 120 minutes of pure relaxation, with soothing, rolling motions, and oils, the therapist massages and eases muscles tension to leave you feeling blissful.

For a complete de-stress, you could pick from the spa’s signature packages. Designed to represent a holistic approach to wellness each offers its own unique benefits with equally exotic and appealing names to match, from Blissful Peace, Golden Rejuvenation and Heaven of Serenity.

Included in the packages or available to purchase separately with single treatments is the tasty authentic Thai lunches – where I honestly had the best Pad thai, I’ve had outside of Thailand. Their ginger tea is also a must. Naturally sweet and so soothing. (Tip – you can also buy this to take home – highly recommended!)

Other spa treatments include a full range of exception facials, a wide range of hand & feet treatments including manicures and pedicures and the spa also offers waxes and lash and brow tinting.

Yaaaaas to everyday spa days. #pamper #spa #happyplace ????????????????

Massage treatments range from R242 for a 30min traditional Thai foot massage to release tension, to R869 for the specialised 90-minute cellulite and circulation massage, while the packages start at R1155. So, while the spa feels exotically luxurious, there is a range of treatments to ensure you feel pampered no matter what your budget.

An easy drive from the city the spa is perfect for a girl’s day out, or couple’s relaxation. For Capetonian’s it’s a step away from Sir Lowry’s pass and the perfect stop off on your way to start a relaxing or romantic weekend away in the Elgin or Hermanus areas. If pampering with an authentic Thai feel is what you are looking for, then this is where you need to go.
