Go Cover – the world’s first on-demand accidental injury cover from Sanlam – is a simple, smart, and super-convenient way to do so. In just five minutes, you can give your domestic helper accident cover for the festive season, or any time, all via the Sanlam Go Cover app.

Jack Kruger, Head of Design at Sanlam, says that you can get up to R1 million in cover (for yourself; up to R300 000 for someone else or groups*) from just R12 a day to as little as R2.20. You can buy it once off for 24 hours or for up to 90 days. Or opt for it to recur weekly, fortnightly or monthly – or custom select any combination of days. Cover includes protection against over 30 different accidental injuries and death, wherever someone is in the world**. “Peace of mind is an amazing gift to give anyone, from family to employees, or domestic workers – and yourself!”

Many domestic helpers and their families travel long distances by public transport over the festive season. Unfortunately, South Africa’s roads are not safe. Last year, the holiday stats were horrific, with close to 800 fatalities in just 18 days. Public and freight transport vehicles were frequently involved. 10 666 fines were issued to drivers without driving licenses, 9 620 went to drivers who weren’t wearing seatbelts, 8 481 were for unlicensed vehicles, 5 811 were for vehicles with worn tyres and 3 039 were for overloading. That was all in the first 18 days of December.

The reality is that our roads require protection, especially during the busiest season. Giving an employee the gift of cover means that should the unexpected occur, he or she will have extra financial resources to assist with recovery.

Here’s how Go Cover works:

1. Download the Sanlam Go Cover app from your app store

2. Select or add people you want to cover*

3. Select the period you want cover for

4. Confirm the amount of cover, and accept the quote or amend cover details

5. Check out and pay with your personal or business debit or credit card

You can opt for a once-off cover period, or set to recur weekly, fortnightly or monthly. There’s no paperwork, and no long-term contract. It’s as straightforward as it sounds.

When buying cover for someone else, you do need to note:

- You only need the person’s mobile number, email address, nationality, ID number (if South African), or passport number and date of birth (if non-South African)

- When you’re buying cover for someone else, or a group, there’s a 24-hour activation period before it kicks in

- Cover for another person is limited to a maximum of R300 000

Kruger concludes, “Providing this kind of protection is a wonderful way to show you care and it gives your domestic worker and employees extra confidence to live their best lives over the holidays. It’s an extremely affordable solution that has the potential to make a huge difference to somebody’s life, should an unexpected curveball occur.”
