It’s quite a rare sight to see gospel star and Zion Christian Church (ZCC) member Winnie Mashaba without her headwrap. Since she burst on to the music scene 20 years ago, Winnie has worn her doek with pride. However, when she does take it off, she slays.
Her Instagram posts have been met with some criticism but, nonetheless, the singer is not deterred by naysayers who question her loyalty to the church.
Talking specifically about her doek, she told SowetanLive that she’s still a loyal member of ZCC.
"I can still be beautiful and encourage other women to be beautiful. If I wear my doek and cover up, it's when I go to the house of the Lord. But in my spare time I'm just myself," she said.
In an interview with DRUM, Winnie was not about to entertain people commenting on her religious beliefs nor her love for doeks, but all she wanted from the public was mutual respect.
“In my church I was taught to respect each and every person – I wish that can be done for me also.”
