Did Amy Schumer really just body shame Khloé Kardashian?

Amy Schumer reportedly opened up her Saturday Night Live performance focusing on Hollywood’s lack of positive female role models and made the Kardashian-clan her main point of criticism.

Between comedic riffs on Hilary Clinton and Bradley Cooper, Amy Schumer said that we (assuming “we” means female celebrities) need to be role models for little girls because the only role models they have right now are the Kardashian family. She went on to say that “we used to have Khloé…” meaning that Khloé was a role model for bigger women, but then she lost weight, or what Amy calls “a Kendall.”

The actress and stand-up comedian threw shade on Khloé Kardashian’s 35-pound weight loss saying that Khloé can no longer be considered a figure for larger figured women to identify with.

Does this make Khloé Kardashian any less of a role model? Not necessarily. In fact, larger women may still consider her a role model for healthier living and body acceptance.

I do not know Khloé personally, but I am sure there are many facets making up who she is that young girls can relate to and identify with.

Although it may not have been Schumer’s intent to body shame Khloé, her words could be damaging.
Yes, Khloé lost a lot of weight, but this doesn’t necessarily reinforce traditional or idealistic standards of beauty.

Amy also includes herself in the need for public figures for bigger woman such as herself to become role models to young girls. Is Amy a good role model?  Or did she go too far?

Although rebellion and innovation is what the world needs to disrupt traditional and limiting ideas of beauty in mainstream media, Amy Schumer may not have chosen her words wisely when addressing the issues of role models.

Young girls and women are drawn to choosing role models they admire and with whom they can identify with the most - whether it’s for their artistic ways of using fashion as body art or singing inspirational songs about heartbreaks.

As the world becomes more and more progressive, we see more and more celebrities and public figures becoming role models across the spectrums of race, body-types, sexuality and activism.

It is up to the next person to select a role model who they see fit to be their pillars of strength and inspirations for their inner ambitions and, ultimately, the role models we choose become the successors we love and learn from.

In response to Schumer’s monologue, Khloé showed just how much of a role model she really is.
Rather than backlash, Khloé tweeted words of self-encouragement and body positivity.

Although Some Entertainment calls her response ‘bitter’ and maybe her feelings were hurt, but the wisdom lies in how Khloé placed herself above negative opinion and criticism.
