Lady Gaga’s Do What U Want has sparked a bit of controversy and I can see why.
Firstly, some of the words are a bit odd. “You can’t have my heart (help me now)/ And you won't use my mind but/ Do what you want with my body.” The lines seem to say that it’s okay to use her body in any way (a bit nonchalant, no?), but you can’t control any other part of her because that’s sacred.
And then there was the actual video. According to Page Six, the video that was first scrapped last year because of ongoing sexual assault allegations against Terry Richardson, who shot and starred in the video, and R Kelly, who was featured on the song.
TMZ somehow managed to obtain a small portion of the video, and it’s quite graphic. And rapey.
It starts off with Gaga laying on a hospital bed, under a sheet, and probably naked. R Kelly is the doctor – this already freaked me out because whenever I see R Kelly the word smet (gross) comes to mind. R Kelly has his hand under the sheet and asks Gaga “How does that feel?” to which she moans delightedly, and he says “Sounds like that medicine is starting to kick in.” And everything about this (which is only the first 8 seconds of the video) just feels wrong.
The rest of the clip isn’t that savoury either with Lady Gaga passing out on the bed and R Kelly having a party around and over her body (because he’s doing what he wants with it, right? Even though she’s UNCONSCIOUS, right?) with women pretending to be nurses (but probably have no medical training whatsoever – just a guess!) in very little pieces of clothing.
And then there’s the scene with Terry Richardson taking pictures of Gaga in a room wallpapered with articles about her while she writhes on the floor naked and touches herself. Oh, and she seems to be pretending to have sex with the floor.
I can’t even get my head around this short clip. Never mind if I had seen the actual full video. What is she trying to say? Why is she unconscious while “nurses” flail her around and hold crayfish over her? Why is a man who was once tried for alleged kiddie porn playing some sort of Dr Feelgood? Why is Terry Richardson, who has been accused of sexually assaulting models several times, taking naked photographs of her? Why is she touching herself? Why is this all happening?
