We chat with your vocal highness as Kelly calls herself on her latest music and what keeps her going:

Jehova, the single - why did you decide to go Gospel?

I haven’t changed from the genre I usually sing; it’s just the single. It’s one of two gospel songs I’ll release on this upcoming album. It’s been 15 years in the game and I’ve been through a lot and come out victorious. I owe it all to God. This song is like a thanksgiving song, many people have been fascinated by how I manage to pull through it all and it’s all God.

Tell us about the upcoming album?

The album is still Afro-Soul. I’m going back to the love songs. I have a single with Vusi Nova, it’s all about love. It’s a long-awaited collaboration and the song is beautifully written and sung. I’m really excited about it. I also do a duet with Brenda Mtambo, it’s a women empowerment anthem called I’m A Strong Woman. We both talk about our experiences in relationships and how those have shaped the women we’ve become. I’m hoping to drop the album at the end of the month; it’s titled Unleashed.

Why that title?

I feel my blessings from God are finally unleashed and I can finally share my spirituality and all that has been behind me all my life. I can say this is by far the best album I’ve put together in 15 years, the production is seamless and every song you listen to you can relate to it because each song has its own beauty and colour. It’s just a beautiful album, I’m truly excited.

You’ve been through a lot, how do you stay motivated?

I’m spiritually grounded; I’m very much in touch with my spirituality. I’m also very positive, there’s no bone in me that’s negative. I somehow manage to block anything that isn’t positive or motivates me or that pushes me to be the best I can be. I’m a godly woman; you can never be negative when you have God, that’s what keeps me going.

Is it safe to say you’re in a happy place?

I’m always positive, even as a child I was upbeat and happy even though our background and things growing up weren’t all rosy. It’s just who I am, right now I’m in a very positive, happy space.

Dream you have for South African Women?

The one thing I truly hope for is for people to really see and realise the power we as women possess. For people to see us as the powerful tool that can be used to change the world, I’m really hoping for that.
