The actress walked the red carpet at Los Angeles Dolby Theater in a strapless black Dior gown with a gold mesh overlay and braided belt, teamed with a black floor-length cape.

Natalie revealed that the gold embellishments were actually the embroidered names of women filmmakers who had not made the all-male Best Director shortlist.

"I wanted to recognise the women who were not recognised for their incredible work this year in my subtle way," she told the LA Times newspaper. 

Those recognised on Natalie's outfit included Lorene Scafaria, Lulu Wang, Greta Gerwig, Mati Diop, Marielle Heller, Melina Matsoukas, Alma Har'el, and Celine Sciamma.
