The former Sex And The City star, actress and activist, Cynthia Nixon revealed that her son is transgender in an Instagram post on Transgender Day of Action recently.
Cynthia is usually quite private, but made an exception to talk about her oldest child, Samuel, who is transgender, and used the opportunity to call attention to the 14th annual Trans Day of Action.
“I’m so proud of my son Samuel Joseph Mozes (called Seph) who graduated college this month,” she wrote in the caption. “I salute him and everyone else marking today’s #TransDayOfAction.”
Seph, who recently graduated from the University of Chicago is Cynthia’s oldest child from her marriage to former partner Danny Mozes. She also has another son with her wife Christine Marinoni.
Although this is the first time Cynthis has publicly mentioned her son’s gender identity, she is and has been an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights both before and after announcing her run for New York governor. Last year she used her Tony's acceptance speech to call out those who were complicit in the Trump administration’s rollback of LGBTQ+ rights.
Now Cynthia’s support of her son and making such a statement on Transgender Day Of Action is very important for several reasons.

Not only does it do the wonderful job of creating awareness around transgender rights, but it also shows people that it’s okay to accept your transgender relatives and love them for who they are and not who they were pretending to be.
Did you know that transgender adults are 14 times more likely to think about suicide and 22 times more likely to attempt suicide than the general public?
And there are crimes against transgender people all the time. This research suggest that more than a third of transgender people suffered hate crimes in 2017 alone. So many of these crimes go unreported because transgender people fear being discriminated against or being victim blamed for reporting these crimes.
But it wasn’t just Cynthia who posted a great message on Trans Day Of Action. Many people also posted their messages sharing support or celebrating being trans on the day.
So spreading awareness and showing the world that being trans is okay will be the only way to make sure that trans people eventually feel like they can be a part of this world without having to make themselves small.
