There’s a new challenge that’s been going around on social media, called #inmyfeelings. Like most good-things-gone-haywire, the challenge started off wholesome and fun.
According to Mashable, the #inmyfeelings challenge was inspired by Drake’s song with the same name, featured on his latest album, Scorpion.
The hit song inspired a dance movement that started when Instagram user, @theshiggyshow posted a video of him dancing to the track. His video proved such a hit that soon, other people started following suit.
It quickly took an absurd and dangerous turn when some users decided that they want to up their game and do the challenge while jumping out of a moving car.
A. Moving. Car.
Needless to say that it did not always go the way they thought it would. Big surprise.
I can’t believe it’s 2018 and we have to remind people that it’s dangerous to jump out of a moving vehicle.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the first instance of people doing absurd and dangerous challenges. And we doubt that it’s going to be the last.
Here’s a roundup of some challenges that will make you shake your head.
The Kylie Jenner lip challenge
She may have recently removed her fillers, but when people first started noticing her fuller lips, many of her followers and fans couldn’t help but look for a more affordable way to emulate the look.
Using glasses (apparently shot glasses were preferred) teens would place their mouths inside of the glass, inhale for as long as they can, thereby creating a suctioning effect – apparently the longer the better – and would then remove it in order to get the desired effect.
The results however, were far from what these young girls wanted, and many ended up with lips that look very red, bruised and even cracked.
The Cinnamon challenge
And then there are those challenges where food items comes into play.
We’ve seen people willingly eat the hottest of peppers, to babies trying lemons for the first time (haai shame!), but what has arguably got to be one of the silliest and most dangerous food challenges out there is the cinnamon challenge.
It first reared its head back in 2001 but has made cyclical appearances throughout the years. Basically the challenge involves daring someone to eat a spoonful of cinnamon powder without swallowing.
However, this is dangerous because the powder dries your throat and can cause people to choke, cough or gag. So far we haven’t seen a resurgence of this trend again – let’s hope it stays that way.
Salt and ice challenge
The interesting thing I’m noticing about the challenges I’ve listed so far is that us humans don’t seem to have a very strong sense of self-preservation. This one? Absolutely no exception to this rule.
According to Express.co.uk, this social trend works as follows: you take some salt and pour it over any area of your skin. Following that, you add a block of ice and place it over the “salted” area.
The result? A burning sensation like no other. In fact, many have described the sensation as being akin to that of frostbite and can result in scarring and the peeling of skin.
Ouch. Ouch. Ouch.
(TRIGGER WARNING: Sensitive content below)
The problem with the internet is that while it’s a place where a lot of fun happens, in many instances popular trends often have unexpected consequences.
Be careful out there – and rather do your research before attempting to join in on something that “looks” fun.
