You've decided to buy a new car, and you have your heart set on a specific model, in a specific colour with very specific extras. Given the amount of money you are about to spend on your car, it makes sense that you expect to drive away with a car that ticks all your boxes.

So what do you do when, after weeks of doing research and visiting showrooms, you still can’t find what you’re looking for?

1. Move your process online – not just for your research, but for the actual purchase too. More and more South Africans are turning to the internet and social media for recommendations. People use the word google when they're talking about searching for something. And also to buy big-ticket items. It’s convenient and effective because it offers you all the information you need to make the right choice for you.

Open yourself up to looking beyond your local dealers so you're no longer bound by geography, especially when you use platforms that engage with dealers across the country on your behalf.

2. Ramp up the competition for your business. When you have access to multiple dealers across the country who will literally ‘bid’ for your sale (which is what new-car sales platforms like Beat The Price facilitate), you are more likely to find a dealer who is willing to go the extra mile to find what you’re looking for.

3. Create a list of your top five priority features and do the research into what cars do have your deal-breaking features. You may be surprised as to how many options are actually out there.

If all else fails, have a first, second and third prize ready in terms of your selection. If you do proper research on all three options then you will still be prepared if your first is not available.
