Distracted driving is a lethal risk on SA’s roads

Smartphones are basically a requirement in the 21st century. These devices become like family and most of us feel almost naked without them.

Don’t believe me? Think about the first time you dropped your phone. How your heart paused for a second when your little technological baby fell to the ground.

It may be time to deal with dependency and learn to put it down before you drive off somewhere. We all know about the "Don't drink and drive" campaign from Arrive Alive, however texting and other phone related activities have also become a hazard on the road.

According to Werner Vermaak, the Communication Manager at ER24, texting has become one of the leading causes of car accidents in South Africa.

"This problem has been exacerbated since the advent of smartphones - now, drivers are not just reading and checking SMS messages but even browsing the Web and social media." says Vermaak.

Studies revealed that a texting driver's reaction time can be poorer than someone who drank alcohol to the legal limit or smoked marijuana.

Vermark emphasized that insurance companies have a right to decline payment for repairs to your car and other cars caused by texting while driving accidents, meaning the aftermath could not only be fatal, but financially devastating as well.

The solution? Join in the ‘Don’t Text And Drive’ movement and put your phones away people. Seriously, use a hands-free kit or put them in the boot if you must.
