5 DIY projects to tackle at home this long weekend

Spray paint empty glass bottles white and use them as trendy vases.

Use matt white paint for colourless bottles, but apply a grey primer to green glass before you spray on the white.

To prevent the paint from running, spray each bottle with a few light layers, allowing each layer to dry completely before you apply the next one. For a contemporary look, use bottles with interesting shapes and group them together.

Dress up your light switches with the help of this template and a little crack filler.

Unscrew the metal covers, wash them and leave them to dry.

Then spray a layer of stencil glue on the back of your stencil and stick it in position on a metal cover.

Use a plastic spatula to spread crack filler over the stencil. Carefully lift off the stencil and allow the crack filler to dry.

Screw the cover with its new raised design back in place.

Do you never have enough small photo frames?

Use glass jars instead.

Print the photos out in the correct size on your computer and insert them into a collection of jars.

Then group them together for maximum effect.

Create a special storage place for your scarves.

Drill small guide holes into the bottom of a wooden hanger, spacing the holes evenly apart.

Screw little hooks into the holes and hang shower-curtain rings from them.

Thread your scarves through the rings.

With the wide variety, which is available these days, you will be able to find the perfect paper for your tray.

Plus it's practical because you can simply wipe them clean with a damp cloth.

Make a few by cutting giftwrap into pieces that are slightly smaller than the base of your tray and then have them laminated.

Trim them to the correct size, but leave a plastic strip around the edges to ensure they are waterproof.

Decorate a hanger and gild it to make a special dress part of your bedroom décor

You Will Need

A wooden hanger

resin or other decorations with a flat back section

glue gun with a narrow tip

white spray paint or undercoat

gold enamel paint

paintbrush

To Make

Arrange your decorations on the hanger and then decide how elseyou would like to embellish it. We glued resin decorations onto the ends and centre of the hanger and then decorated the sections in between with patterns that we drew with the thin-tipped glue gun. Draw the patterns on the hanger first if you don’t want to do them freehand.

TIP We found resin decorations in a scrapbooking shop.

DIY projects

When you have finished doing the decorations and the glue is dry, you can paint the hanger. Spray paint or paint it white first, as an undercoat – you may have toapply more than one coat to get a solid finish – before you paint it with gold enamel paint. Use a dry brush and paint lightly over the raised sections for a soft, old world effect. Leave it to dry and then seal it with a suitable varnish, if you prefer.
