Create your own perfectly pretty potholders

Add some flair to your kitchen with these pot holders.

You will need:

• 16mm Supawood

• big beads for the ‘feet’ of the pot holders

• colour pictures

• matching PVA paint

• sponge roller and paint tray

• paintbrush

• joiner‘s glue

• epoxy glue

• heat-resistant varnish

• craft knife, cutting mat and metal ruler

To make:

1 Have the Supawood cut into squares in the size you require.

2 Look for pretty pictures in old magazines or calendars. Use your craft knife, cutting mat and metal ruler to cut out the pictures so that they fit inside the squares, but are 2 to 3cm smaller than the squares on all sides.

3 Paint the squares in PVA paint in a matching colour – use a sponge roller to ensure an even finish. Leave to dry.

4 Use joiner’s glue to paste the pictures in the middle of each of the squares. Dilute the glue with a little water if necessary and use a paintbrush to apply it. Leave to dry.

5 Seal the pictures with a heat- resistant varnish. Apply a few coats, waiting until each one has dried completely before applying the next one.

6 Use epoxy glue to paste a bead on each corner of the underneath side of the pot holder – these will serve as the feet. Leave the glue to dry completely before using your pot holders.
