Here's how to make actual musical chairs

You will need:

  • sheet music
  • upholstery, fabric that is suitable for printing on
  • unbleached linen
  • high-density sponge (optional)
  • contact glue (optional)
  • staple gun
  • pliers
  • needlework scissors
  • measuring tape

To make:

1 Take photos of the sheet music (or any other design that suits your décor) and have them printed on upholstery fabric.

NOTE Some printers supply the fabric too.

2 Remove the old fabric from the seat and take out all the staples. If the sponge is still in a good condition, you can reuse it, otherwise have a new piece cut.

Remove the old sponge carefully and use it as a template for cutting the new one. Use contact glue to stick the sponge in place on the loose seat base.

3 Cover the seat base and sponge with unbleached linen – this will help to protect the upholstery fabric and will create soft curves. Place the seat base sponge side down on the wrong side of the linen. Measure the depth (70mm in our case), add 30mm and cut out, right around, according to these measurements.

4 Start in the middle of one side and staple the linen to the seat base, about 20mm from the edge of the base. Pull it taut over the sponge – just firmly enough to create a smooth curve – and staple it again, to the opposite side of the seat.

5 Repeat for the other two sides.

6 Fold the fabric neatly in at the corners and staple it in place.

7 Continue to staple the fabric to secure it, crisscrossing between the sides as before, from the middle section to the corners.

8 Trim away any excess fabric and then repeat with the upholstery fabric.

TIP Finish the seat off neatly by gluing a piece of cord or ribbon over the staples – use a glue gun for this.
