It’s almost my favourite time of year. When we can all dress up and take on the personas of our favourite characters or something scary.
It’s a lot of fun and even more fun is having a do with friends where you can all be creative and dress up together. But parties can sometimes be expensive. So how do you get around the massive cost and still have a great time? Here are a few tips.
The invites
Instead of printing out invites rather send a digital copy. Your friends and family will still have the information they need without the extra hassle of having a piece of paper they don’t really need. Go to greetingsisland.com and use one of their free templates to create an invite. You can customise each one to your specific details and then download the PDF or image and send it to your guests via email/Whatsapp/DM.
Getting all the décor
Now, you’ll be needing some things to decorate your place to get into the spooky vibe. But you don’t necessarily have to spend lots of money on it. How? A little DIY of course! You can get some great images online, print them out and stick them up all over your party venue.

But if you don’t want to make all your décor yourself, there are some pretty cheap options you can buy.
Head on over to Crazy Store and get a whole range of Halloween décor for really cheap. They’ve got light-up lanterns for R29.99, skeletons for R29.99 and flashing eyeballs for R11.99. So cheap and so cool to mix in with your DIY décor.

The food
Check out all the great Halloween-themed treats to make from Food24. You could make these spooky severed finger Halloween treats complete with fake blood. Or one of these great pumpkin recipes or make some of these yummy vanilla cupcakes.
Remember to have lots of candy too!

The drinks
This is an awesome list of cocktails you can make – both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Or if you’d prefer everyone be able to mix their own drinks, then make sure even the alcohol suits the theme with these apothecary-themed labels.
The entertainment
Have some Halloween-themed movies playing on the TV in the background for a little extra ambience and you could even play a drinking game with a movie like Hocus Pocus or Scream if it’s an adults-only party.
You could play bobbing for apples (although that might not be great if some of your guests are wearing intricate makeup) or make a Halloween-themed piñata. Another great game is Halloween Guess Who. Check out a list of games here.
Also remember to get some cool music. So if you’re going for a really spooky type atmosphere you might want to get some chamber music or something. Or just find a YouTube video like the one below and play it on loop during the night. Or a playlist of Halloween-themed music.
