You will need

  • chipboard (1 200 x 600mm)
  • Alcolin Fast Set Wood Glue
  • 10 pine cover strips (8 x 44 x 2 400mm) cut into 200mm pieces
  • nail gun
  • Woodoc Water-Borne FLOOR
  • Woodoc Colours in Inky Blue, Clifton Grey and Oak
  • square set
  • steel ruler
  • pencil
  • jigsaw

Here’s how…

1. Decant about 150ml of Woodoc Water-Borne FLOOR into three containers. Mix with the three different Woodoc Colours.

2. Paint a third of the cover strips in each of the colours. Apply two coats.

3. Use the square set to draw a 45° grid on your chipboard. You don’t need to draw it over the entire board; this is just to get you started. Also draw a line across the width of the board to set a point where the herringbone pieces will meet.

4. Once you have a grid to work with, start packing your cover strips out in a herringbone pattern. Arrange the colours randomly.

5. When you’re happy with the look of your herringbone pattern, glue and nail each piece into position; start from one corner and work your way across the board.

6. Turn the board over and cut all the pieces that overhang the chipboard away with the jigsaw.
