5 easy ways to decorate your home for free

accreditation

You probably love the space you live in, but are bored with the same walls and floors and finishes and you want something a little bit different. But the problem is how to change all those things without spending lots of money, or if you’re broke, how to do it without spending money at all.

Here are a few tips:

Use leftover paint

If you’ve still got paint lying around from when you decided to paint another room or you have a neighbour or friend with some to spare, use it to create an accent wall. It could be the entire wall, or you could paint a mural or decorations on it or paint a shelf or cupboard to blend in with the colour of the wall and give it a seamless look.

Add a mirror or some pictures and you’ve just given the room a facelift.

Drape some extra fabric

Covering your couch or headboard with a piece of material is a great way to change the look of furniture without reupholstering it. Especially when it isn't in condition anymore. Get out those scarves or throw blankets and drape them over any pieces that are worse for wear and add new textures to your surroundings. And best part is that when you’re sick of it, you can easily swap it out for something else.

Bring nature in

If you’ve got pot plants that usually live somewhere else, how about setting them up in your bedroom? Or getting a cutting from a friend and putting it in a pot in your kitchen? Or add them as centrepieces or in dead corners where you need a little more colour and life.

Convert to open shelving

Renting and hate your kitchen cupboards? Unscrew and remove the doors to reveal the inside of your shelves. Yes, they might possibly be messy, but then you can spend some time organising them beautifully and creating beautiful displays. Remember that you don’t have to do it with all the cupboards. Just one or two also work well to show off some of your pretty dishes or glasses.

Display things in new ways

Cast your eye around your home and see how you can highlight objects in a fresh way. You could mount some things on the wall or change the way you display your books, or swap where objects stand and how they’re grouped together.
