In order to prevent your backache and waste any food, it might be a good idea to do some spring cleaning in your two cold appliances.

Some of you might be asking, does it really matter where your food goes in the refrigerator or freezer? The answer is yes, according to GLAD, organising your fridge or freezer saves you time and, more importantly, money.

Taking that into consideration, here are some tips on how to organise your fridge and freezer:

How to organise your refrigerator:

Did you know that your fridge is built with various temperature points? And here I thought it was cold all over.

There are various ways to stack your fridge and according to The Kitchn, you should organise your fridge based on the temperature the foods need to be cooked at.

This method is great and saves you time on looking for various ingredients, it’s amazing what a little organisation can do:

Upper shelves: This is where the items need to be cool, but won’t easily spoil like left-overs, prepared food or medicine work great here.

Lower shelves: The bottom shelf is where the fridge is coldest, so we put fresh and high safety risk food, mainly raw ingredients, such as milk, meat and fish.

Drawers: The drawers are designed to hold produce at specific humidity’s that’s why we put fruit, vegetables or cheese in the drawers.

Doors: It’s the warmest place in your refrigerator and you should not store any perishables, only condiments, such as soda and syrups.

How to organise your freezer:

Organising your freezer is one of the dreaded chores to do, as you’ll find yourself unearthing food that you probably had a year ago and the numb frozen fingers searching for that missing ingredient. Finding your food or drinks in your freezer shouldn’t be a bother, as one should know what’s going on down in that mini-igloo.

But what are people getting wrong? Not many know what kind of foods you can and should freeze. According to The Kitchn, you shouldn’t freeze high moisture food, such as fruit, fried food, yogurt and milk. Freeze in portions, meaning that you shouldn’t put an entire chicken in, but rather cut them and put an assortment in various packets.

According to Organize Junkie, a tip to do is to seal, name and date your food, which makes it easier to identify and store properly. Another tip is to group similar foods together, it cuts back on buying duplicate products and on finding the right product. Also shelving it and arranging it so it can be easily accessible, invest in plastic tubs or dividers.

Although it may sound a bit daunting as cleaning up isn’t the best thing to do in your spare time, but doing so can not only make life easier for you, but for your tummy too.
