How to plan a great party

Everyone should have at least one HUGE party sometime in their lives. And with New Year's Eve coming up now is the perfect time.

Easier said than done, right? Wrong! Here’s how to throw an amazing party, without driving yourself insane:

1.    Decide on your theme and/or décor
Themed parties are always fun, especially if it’s relatively easy to dress for, or extremely creative.  Themes are not necessary, however, especially if you’re not really into getting dressed up, but they do have the makings for an awesome party. Décor also plays an important part, especially when used to spruce up a themed party as it creates an atmosphere and gives guests a few more things to talk about.  

2.    Shop Around
Once you’ve decided on the décor and/or theme, shop around. It may take a while to find the best prices, but you could save so much more if you just have a little patience. Go to various party stores. While one shop may have a good deal on balloons, another may have a bargain on the type of napkins you’re after.

3.    Use your family
This is not as bad as it sounds. If they’re always offering to help out, then let them! Not only will you be in the good books, but every little bit helps. So, if you have a brother-in-law who’s a DJ and an aunt who makes a mean cake, get them to chip in. Discuss the kind of payment, if any, they would like and what you need them to do. Who knows? You may just get it for a little less than you think!

4.    Finding the right venue
Once you’ve decided how many people are coming to your party, it’s time to find a venue. Don’t spend unnecessary money on getting a large venue for 50 people.  A more intimate setting is ideal for a party with fewer guests. Ask your close friends and family if they have any recommendations. And also make sure that the venue is worth its price. A house party is always intimate and special, but the cleaning up can be a pain in the butt.

5.    The bar
If your venue comes with a bar, arrange a tab with the barman. Once the tab has been reached, your guests can pay for their own drinks.  If the tab is not reached, the venue usually gives you the balance so it’s a win/win. Sending out invites? Make sure you mention your limited tab or the fact that it’s a cash bar – your guests may need to budget!

6.    Send/Deliver your invites in good time
A party is not a party without interesting people. So, make sure they know what’s happening in advance. Send out your invites roughly a month before the time and ask your guests to RSVP, asap.  This gives them – and you - enough time to prepare if there is a theme or if they have kids who require a babysitter for the night.

7.    Have fun!
Remember that parties are fun! Don’t drive yourself crazy by stressing over every single detail. If something goes wrong (heaven forbid!) on the day, then simply take it in your stride and laugh about it. Chances are that your guests won’t even notice !
