Give your bed that homemade 5-star luxurious feeling

An inviting bed is made up of more than just a comfy mattress and an attractive duvet. By paying special attention to various layers and components, you can turn yours from bland to dreamy.

Use to pillows per person of which the back pillow is 50 x 90cm (a king pillow) and the front set 45 x 70cm (a standard pillow).

Here's how to make your bed fit for a king:

1. Use a box nightfrill without pleats to give the bed a stylish finish. Cover the mattress with a mattress protector, followed by a fitted sheet. The corners are easy to cover if you go about it diagonally.

2. Cover the bed with a flat sheet; face side under, so the ‘right’ side shows when you fold it back. Make a ‘hospital fold’’ by pulling the bottom corners out straight. Tuck everything hanging out the side neatly back into the corner.

3. Neatly fold back the edge.

4. Tuck the corner snugly under the mattress.

5. Throw a bedspread loosely over the duvet.

Finish off the bed with a colourful quilt and scatter cushions. Scatter cushions are an affordable accessory that can be replaced every few months to keep the style fresh.

The golden rule of bedding is: one set in the cupboard, one in the wash and one on the bed.

How to look after your bedlinen

• Air pillows and duvets regularly by hanging them outside in full sun.

• Dry-clean your pillows and duvets at least once every six months.

• Bedlinen should be washed once a week at least; warm water is recommended to kill off dust mites.

• Fold bedlinen once dry, to make ironing easier.

• Refresh stored linen with scented sprays.

• Keep your bed and linen free from dustmites by vacuuming regularly and deep-cleaning at least once a month with any specialised upright vacuum cleaners, deep cleaners or steam cleaners.

Storage tips

• Make sure your linen is completely dry before packing it away.

• Store it in a clean, dust-free place on a flat surface and away from direct sunlight, which can bleach and mark it.

• A linen cupboard is ideal, but you could also store it in divan drawers, under the bed base, in an ottoman at the end of the bed or in a lined bottom drawer. If you are using an airing cupboard, make sure you line the shelves with non-marking paper to prevent the wooden slates from making indents and creases on the linen.
