The other woman is a part of my family

In her weekly newsletter, Women24 editor Lili Radloff talks about her relationship with the woman who cleans her house. We asked our readers to share some of their thoughts. This is what you had to say.

Tracey
- The other woman in our house is called Bessie and I'm not sure my partner and I would survive without her even though she only comes in once a week.

We both have a very busy schedule and what Bessie does for us is take away the stress of having to fit in the cleaning things that need doing that we often don't have the time to do and once she's been you can see the difference in that everything is restored to a space, not necessarily the space it needs to go but to a space none the less.

She's an amazing woman, in her late 50's who still works hard to support her family, is really great at what she does and looks at any way in which she feels she can better herself by taking courses that she saves for meticulously.

She often comes to share her new found knowledge very proudly with us when she comes in to work. For all intents and purposes she's part of our family at home and at work as she works in my partner's business once a week as well.

Bronwyn - You made me cry. You just put into words so well what I try to explain to my UK friends who have never have had the 'privilege' of having someone who cleans their house and think its just an uppity colonial white women thing.

Arlene - Our helper told me to call her Margaret. She is in her 60’s and truth is, I don't need her as my youngest two are now 18 and 17 so we are able to do everything ourselves.

We keep her as she has been part of our lives for so long. She only works for me 2 days a week, but she comes in on a Monday (works her own hours – my boss would so fire me), works in the afternoon and stays over Monday night. The spare room has become hers.

She goes off on Tuesday to work for another family within walking distance from our house and returns to us Tuesday night for dinner and she works again for us on a Wednesday. We give her dinner both nights and we all even avoid watching our TV programmes on a Monday and Tuesday so that Margaret can watch her soapies.

Anonymous  - My domestic helper is an absolute darling, she only comes in once a week. I love Tuesdays as she is an angel sent to me with having four teenagers in the house.

She is always there with a smile on her face and we talk like friends if she needs help she can count on me and vice versa.
