Johannesburg, the thriving capital of South Africa is often touted as one of South Africa’s most of expensive cities, but we managed to find great activities to do this summer in Johannesburg and Pretoria as well.

Gauteng may be the smallest province in South Africa but it maintains some of the greatest communal, educational and artistic fun.

We round up 13 things to do for under a R100 in Gauteng to prove that you don't the biggest wallet to have the greatest fun:

Johannesburg

1.    Kitchener’s Comedy Night – R20
There’s never been a cheaper way to enjoy South Africa’s comedy scene, R20 will get you in to Kitchener’s Cavery Bar in Braamfontein, Johannesburg  every Tuesday night at 8pm for some side-splitting comedy.

2.    Climb Orlando Towers – R30
The Orlando cooling Towers forms two beautifully distinctive landmarks in the urban township of Soweto. Soon to be extended by 100m, a view from the top of these towers is the perfect way to challenge your spirit for the great outdoors.

3. The circus – R20 – R100
When was the last time you experienced the circus? Visit the Boswell Wilkie Circus canopy that has become something of a landmark just outside Meyerton, Johannesburg.

4.   Sci-Bono Discover Centre – R35 for adults and R20 for children
Housed in a repurposed power station, this world-class science centre is a fun way to understand the evolution of all things science and technology.

5.   Johannesburg Botanical Gardens – Free
The most sought after spot if you’re looking for a tranquil place, the Botanical Gardens forms a breath-taking public space for joggers and picnickers. You also have the option of visiting the Emmarentia Dam.

6.    Afronova Art Gallery – Free
Situated in the Newtown Precinct of Johannesburg, the modern and contemporary artwork of Henri Vergon allows you to experience the city and African creativity in all of its artistic glory. For the book lovers, the gallery boasts a bookshop filled with a wide range of publications on African art.

7.    Johannesburg Zoo – R75 for Adults and R46 for pensioners and children under 12
One of the few established places worldwide to have white lions and Siberian tigers, this South African zoo provides entertainment for the whole family.

8.    Gilroy beer tasting – R80
Enjoy a journey within the award-winning world of beer accompanied by Steve Gilroy himself. If you’re over the age of 18, head to Muldersdrift for hand-crafted natural beer.

9.    Grounded at echo – R45 – R55
Is learning to speak another language on your bucket list? Why not take up free Zulu lessons at Grounded at Echo every Monday from 5pm to 6m. You can also get a delicious piece of carrot cake and coffee for up to R55.

10.    Wonderboom Nature Reserve – R25 for adults and R15 for kids under 13
Have you ever seen a 1000-year old tree? Open from 7am to 4pm, find peace beneath the shade of the Wonderboom fig tree that spans over 50 metres wide. This wondrous tree can shelter up to 1000 people.

11.    The longest street in South Africa – free
Cape Town is not the only city boasting a long urban market street. Stanza Bopape, Helen Joseph, WF nKomo and Elias Motsoaledi form the nerve centre of the most historical roads in Pretoria. It’s completely worth a stroll.

12.    Picnic in front of the Union Buildings – Free
Enjoying the summer warmth can be simple. Pack some yummy treats into a picnic basket and head down to the gardens of one of the most famous buildings in South Africa.
