A 24-year-old woman was recently kicked off her flight from Birmingham to Dubai after a flight attendant overheard her talking about having period pain.
What you say? Yep, we thought the same when we heard about the drama.
According to The Times UK, Beth Evans, along with her boyfriend, Joshua Moran, 26, were made to leave their Emirates flight after she was overheard talking about her stomach being sore from period pain.
Take a second to wrap your head around this. Because a woman’s body was doing what it usually does, she was asked to leave a plane. Actually kicked off a flight for having a normal physiological process happen in her body.
Even though Beth described the pain as “one out of 10”, the airline still told her she could not take the seven-hour flight.
Joshua said to The Sun that it was “embarrassing” to have his partner explain her period pains after being overheard and “They didn’t have anyone look her over. They just contacted a medical team in the US and they said Beth couldn’t fly.”
Because, you know, having cramps are now seen as a medical emergency and women aren’t able to function with period pain.
The rest of the statement from Emirates reads: “The passenger alerted the crew onboard that she was suffering from discomfort and pain and mentioned that she was feeling unwell. The captain made the decision to request medical support and offload Ms. Evans so she could access medical assistance as needed.
“The safety of our passengers and crew is of paramount importance, and we would not have wanted to endanger Ms. Evans by delaying medical help had she worsened during the seven-hour flight to Dubai.
“We hope Ms. Evans felt better soon and look forward to welcoming her onboard again soon.”
Beth insisted to The Sun that she would have been fine to take the trip but they were forced to reschedule the trip and pay over R4000 each to do so.
Now this treatment speaks of gross inherent misogyny since the flight attendant didn’t even think it was ridiculous to ask this woman to leave when she literally said that her period pain was completely bearable.
She was bullied by the airline for her body doing exactly what it was supposed to do. Women deal with having their periods and period pain every day and still manage to work, look after themselves and their families and be contributing members of society. They might have to pop some pain pills while they do it, get some rest or get a hot water bottle but they get shit done.
So why was this so different?
Why was this woman treated like she was some sort of delicate flower?
Because women are still seen as weak for doing the things that come naturally to us.
Women are still seen as the weaker sex.
This view needs to change.
