South Korea is offering a jail retreat as a getaway option for people in search of some peace and quiet.

According to a report on BBC, a former prosecutor decided that the perfect way for people to get access to complete solitude was to create a retreat that resembles and mimics jail life.

The idea stemmed from the fact that the lawyer, Kwon Yong-suk endured working more than 100 hours a week and wanted to find a way where he could spend time just switching off without any interruptions.

The result of this was a getaway facility where people could be booked in for two days and spend time in “solitary confinement” with almost no access to things that often distract them, i.e. technology.

It’s certainly quite a novel way of combating stress – but why resort to such drastic measures when here in SA there’s a variety of unique getaway retreats you can also unwind and be free to come and go as you please.

We round up some unique places worth visiting:

The Kagga-Kamma private nature reserve, Cederberg

The stunning reserve is situated in the Cederberg area and is wonderfully unique in that the accommodation offers you an up close and personal experience with nature with rooms that are almost embedded within 'caves'.

The reserve offers a myriad of things to do – and is the perfect getaway for nature lovers who want to star gaze, study rock art and hiking trails, to mention but a few.

What I wouldn’t give to spend a weekend here.

They describe themselves as “part caravan park and part designer farm lodge” and it’s not hard to see why. There’s a little something for everyone as you can choose between airstream trailers (i.e. glamped up caravans), self-catering villas and tents.

Set against the backdrop of mountains and stunning lake views, Old Mac Daddy offers a range of activities that are exciting and family friendly. Think archery, mountain biking, spa treatments and kayaking to mention but a few – there’s a little something for everyone.

Lion Sands Reserve, Kruger National Park

Located in Mpumalanga, the Lion Sands Reserve's four lodges are found within the Sabi Sand Game reserve and the Kruger National Park.

Like most lodges, the reserve offers a fantastic range of experiences, but the one that makes this a standout is opting for their treehouse lodges. Artfully decorated, these lodges allow you to have the sleeping under the stars experience while offering cover and a gourmet picnic experience, to mention but a few.

It’s the ultimate luxury rustic experience – one that we cannot wait to try for ourselves.

Castello di Monte, Pretoria

Listen, we all can’t live in a palace like the recently wed royals, but we can experience a taste of it in our own backyard.

Live the sweet life by booking a few days in the Tuscan style castello and enjoy services like wellness and spa packages, gorgeous terrace views and 16th century paintings and murals throughout the hotel.

Who wouldn’t want to feel like they’re relaxing in a Renaissance painting? You get to enjoy all of the historical settings, with all of the modern conveniences – something I’m pretty sure we’d all prefer.
